In a game billed as the “County Line Clash,” the Corner Yellow Jackets defeated the Dora Bulldogs 21-14 in front of a packed house at Horace Roberts Field in Dora this past Friday night.
The Yellow Jackets were the first team to create noise, as defensive back Max Hill intercepted a pass from Dora quarterback KeSean Pryor. However, the first quarter proved quiet as neither team managed to put any points on the board.
The second quarter seemed more promising for Dora as the Bulldog defense created momentum with an interception by Camden Hines with 9:28 remaining until halftime. A few plays later, Dora capitalized on the interception with a touchdown run by Jayden Griffin, but Corner blocked the subsequent PAT.
Coming out of halftime, each team went four-and-out before Corner scored to go up 7-6.
Dora couldn’t answer as Pryor threw his second interception of the game, and the Yellow Jacket offense drove down the field to make it 14-6 with 6:49 left in the fourth quarter. A big downfield completion from Pryor to Josh Williams and a successful two-point conversion helped the Bulldogs even the score at 14 with 2:32 to go in the quarter, but just before the start of the fourth, Brendan Conner and the Yellow Jacket offense rumbled downfield to put Corner ahead 21-14.
The Corner defense then stood strong, stopping Pryor on a critical fourth-and-6 with 3:23 left in the fourth and making another stop on a fourth-and-11 with less than a minute to go in the game to preserve the victory.
“The season isn’t over; we still have a lot to play for, and everything we want is still right in front of us,” said Dora Head Coach Chavis Williams. “They (Corner) came in here ready to play, and I felt like we played hard but just felt like we made key mistakes at the wrong moments.
“We’re just going to get back to work with our bye week next week, but I’m still proud of my guys. Even when we don’t play as good, they still work hard for us, so we’re all staying positive. It’s just one game, so we’ll get back to it and get some things fixed.”
As the Bulldogs (3-2) take a rest this week, the Yellow Jackets (4-0) look to remain undefeated as they host Fultondale this Friday. WL
