The Town of Nauvoo will host a full morning of community events on Saturday, June 20, including a car show, a community-wide yard sale, and an America250 flag-raising ceremony.
The Nauvoo Fire Department will host the Nauvoo Car Show at Nauvoo Park, located at 603 4th Avenue, Nauvoo, AL 35578. Registration is $20 and will be held from 7 to 11 a.m. To pre-register, contact Matt Sanford at 205-931-2368 or 205-697-5890.
Nauvoo Mayor Terry Burgett says families can expect “a lot going on,” including bounce houses for children, food sold by the fire department at the ballpark concession stand, vehicles on display, and dessert items available from catering trucks.
Also on Saturday, the Nauvoo Community Club will sponsor a community-wide yard sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The club will rent booths at the Nauvoo Community Center, and residents may also register their at-home yard sales. Registration is free, and the Community Club will provide free maps showing participating yard sale locations. To register an address or reserve a booth, call 205-302-4896.
Following the car show winners’ announcement around noon, the town will hold an America250 Flag Raising Ceremony at Nauvoo Town Hall. The ceremony will include opening remarks, a reading from the Declaration of Independence, the flag raising, reflection, and closing remarks.
Burgett says the flag ceremony adds a special meaning to the day.
“I was around for the 200th anniversary, and now the 250th,” he says. “It is rather special, and kind of heartwarming to me, to live here when the country has been around for 250 years. Most nations don’t make it this long.”
Burgett also says that the weekend’s events are part of a larger momentum in Nauvoo, especially at the town park.
“My favorite part of all of this is seeing the park being used,” he says, noting that this spring and early summer have brought children back to the playground and ball fields. “That has been special to me because it was frustrating to see it sit there not being used for so many years.”
He also noted that year marked the first organized sports in Nauvoo in more than 20 years, giving local children another way to be active and involved.
Burgett says he hopes those who attend Saturday’s events will see a town working to move forward.
