City of Jasper Launches Coordinated Community Effort through JCAN to Address Homelessness

The City of Jasper hosted the initial meeting of the Jasper Community Assistance Network (JCAN) on Thursday, April 23, bringing together community partners to begin a coordinated, data-driven approach to addressing homelessness in the area.

The purpose of JCAN is to strengthen communication, reduce duplication of services, and better align existing resources as part of the City of Jasper’s Homelessness Response Framework. The network serves as a key component in organizing community-wide efforts while building stronger connections among local agencies, nonprofits, and faith-based organizations.

A total of 42 individuals attended the meeting, and to date, 24 agencies have completed or submitted the Community Asset Audit as part of JCAN. Information gathered through this process will be used to develop a comprehensive resource guide identifying services, populations served, and potential gaps in support, helping improve access to resources and inform future coordination efforts. The City anticipates continued growth of the Jasper Community Assistance Network as additional organizations are identified and invited to participate. JCAN will meet on a quarterly basis as this work continues.

Mayor Josh Gates welcomed attendees and emphasized the importance of collaboration in addressing the complex challenges associated with homelessness. “This meeting was an important step forward for Jasper,” said Gates. “We had a strong turnout from organizations that are already doing meaningful work in our community. This effort is about bringing those voices together, improving communication, and making sure we are working in a more coordinated and effective way. When we align our efforts, we create better outcomes not only for those in need, but for our entire community.”

City officials noted that homelessness presents itself in many forms and extends beyond individuals living on the street. Families experiencing housing instability, children who are couch surfing, and individuals living in vehicles are also part of the broader challenge being addressed.

“This was a very productive and encouraging first meeting,” commented Tana Collins-Allred, Community & Economic Development Director for the City of Jasper and Chair of the Homelessness Response Steering Committee. “We have a strong foundation of organizations already serving our community, and JCAN allows us to better understand that work, connect those efforts, and move forward in a more intentional way. Our goal is to create clearer pathways to stability for individuals and families while continuing to work alongside the agencies that are already making a difference every day.”

City leaders expressed their appreciation for the commitment shown by those involved and reinforced the importance of a collaborative approach moving forward.

“The safety and well-being of all of our citizens is a priority, including those who are most vulnerable,” Gates added. “This work requires coordination, communication, and a shared commitment, and we are grateful for the individuals and organizations who are stepping forward to be part of this effort.”
