Cordova will commemorate the 15th anniversary of the April 27, 2011, tornado with a Community Day of Service on Monday, April 27, 2026.
The event is designed as both a time of remembrance and a day of action, honoring the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the many first responders, volunteers, churches, organizations, neighboring communities, and individuals who helped Cordova recover in the aftermath of the storm.
Activities will take place around Cordova City Hall throughout the day, beginning with Prayer at the Pole at 9 a.m. A blood mobile will be available from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the Pazzo Pizza food truck will be on site from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Donuts and coffee will also be provided by Cane Creek Camp & Tackle.
At 10 a.m., community members will gather to plant the Liberty Tree at Indian Head Mill Park. A Lunch & Learn will be held at Long Memorial Church from noon to 1 p.m. Additional activities will include the Yellow Dot Program at City Hall, blood pressure checks by the Cordova Fire Department, and a park cleanup and tree ceremony at Bankhead Middle School.
Organizers say that the Community Day of Service reflects Cordova’s resilience in the years since the tornado, while also offering residents and visitors a chance to give back in meaningful ways.
This event is part of the America 250 initiative, a nationwide celebration marking the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
