Camp McDowell’s annual Camper Scholarship Campaign is underway now through January 16, with a goal of raising $65,000 to help ensure more children can experience a meaningful week at summer camp, regardless of financial circumstances.
Each summer, Camp McDowell hosts more than 1,000 children from across Alabama and neighboring states at Summer Camp on Clear Creek. Camp sessions are built around age-appropriate, faith-based themes led by Episcopal priests and supported through skits, music, art, and thoughtful teaching. Alongside daily programming, campers enjoy hiking, paddle sports on Clear Creek and Sloan Lake, arts and crafts, swimming, ropes and group action courses, field games, free time, and the beloved Pasture Party, complete with face painting, grilled treats, watermelon, and a hayride.
In 2023 alone, 222 campers received scholarships, ensuring financial barriers did not prevent children from participating in these formative experiences. Camper scholarships also support Special Session camps and Bethany’s Kids camps. Since 1998, Special Session has provided a space where everyone belongs. Today, Bethany Village continues that legacy through accessible facilities and inclusive summer programs designed to welcome campers of all abilities.
“As a single, working widow, Camp Scholarship has given me the opportunity to brighten my children’s summers and has provided them with an opportunity that I cannot do myself. Thank you for your generosity,” shared a 2024 scholarship recipient.
Support for the Camp McDowell Scholarship Campaign directly impacts families, opening doors to friendship, personal growth, and a place where campers are fully seen and valued.
“We would be nothing without our community. The financial support given by our donors means that everyone truly is welcome at Camp,” said Camp McDowell Operations Director Ben Donaldson. “$100 will give a full day and night of an impactful experience to young people from across our state. Camp McDowell staff and campers are eternally grateful for the support we receive.”
Camp McDowell’s 2026 summer camp schedule kicks off on May 22 and runs through July 31. Community support will help ensure even more children can experience the joy, belonging, and lasting impact of Camp McDowell this summer.
