Cawaco RC&D Opens Grant Applications for Central Alabama Projects

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Cawaco Resource Conservation and Development Council is now accepting grant applications for projects that strengthen communities across Central Alabama. Local nonprofits, schools, government agencies and community organizations in Blount, Chilton, Jefferson, Shelby and Walker counties are encouraged to apply for grants ranging from $5,000 to $20,000. The application window runs April 1 through June 30, 2026.

Grant priority areas

Cawaco RC&D supports projects that make a broad community, environmental, or educational impact. Priority areas for the upcoming cycle include:

  • Community improvement
  • Education
  • First responder support
  • Parks and recreation

Grants support a wide range of projects, including job skills training, community gardens, infrastructure improvements, safety equipment, and community development projects.

Community impact

Projects supported by the Cawaco RC&D grant program have a strong track record of generating returns far beyond the initial investment. In 2025, local leaders generated nearly $4 million in total community impact — a return of $4.69 for every $1 granted. Across 73 locally led projects, the program served more than 150,000 people in Blount, Chilton, Jefferson, Shelby and Walker counties.

“The RC&D grant program connects Central Alabama communities to the resources and partnerships they need to help people thrive, grow the economy and protect the environment,” said Kellie Johnston, Cawaco RC&D’s Executive Director. “We’re proud to play a small part in what these local leaders are already doing to make our region stronger.”

The Cawaco RC&D grant program is offered in partnership with the Alabama Legislature and the Alabama Association of RC&D Councils.

How to apply

Grant applications for fiscal year 2027 are accepted online April 1 through June 30, 2026. To apply and learn more about eligibility requirements, visit www.cawaco.org.
