Bevill State Community College launched its E-sports program this year, and first-year student Kaylie Estille played a key role in its debut season.
Competing in Mario Kart, Kaylie finished with a strong 10-3 regular season record, advanced through the Regional Postseason, and made it to the third round of the National tournaments, tying for fifth place in the nation.
Kaylie’s journey with Mario Kart began when she first picked up the game in eighth grade.
“The first time I played, I didn’t even know what I was doing,” she says. “But somehow, I still came in first place.”
Her natural talent for racing games grew, and when Bevill State introduced E-sports, she saw an opportunity to take her skills to the next level.
Success didn’t come by chance—Kaylie worked hard to achieve her results. She prepares for matches by running time trials, experimenting with shortcuts, and refining her strategies.
Kaylie’s favorite character to race is Link from The Legend of Zelda, and one of her most reliable tracks is Rock Mountain, where she uses well-practiced shortcuts to her advantage.
Her preparation paid off in the regular season, where her win record earned her a spot in the regional tournament. She tied for third place regionally, securing a spot at Nationals, where she advanced to the third round.
When asked how she handles the intensity of competition, Kaylie shared that her strategy is to stay focused and calm.
“I just told myself it’s another game,” she says.
At the same time, her personality and leadership made her a standout player. As the only woman on the team, Kaylie embraced her role as a trailblazer for others. Her catchphrase, “like a boss,” became a signature motto for her season, capturing the confidence and determination she brought to both competition and leading her team.
Outside of E-sports, Kaylie studies cosmetology, and she enjoys doing makeup, hair, and nails. She balances these hobbies with her other interests, like caring for her dog, playing the clarinet, and participating in theatre.
Her mom, Kristie, said watching Kaylie compete has been a highlight of the year.
“When she’s racing, we’re all cheering her on. It gets intense, but it’s so exciting to see her thrive.
“She has shown what’s possible and helped set the tone for what Bevill State E-sports can be moving forward.” WL
