With the warm weather upon us, it’s the perfect time to explore the great outdoors and enjoy the many recreational activities Walker County has to offer. From swimming and strolling to playing sports and fishing, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Here are just some of the ways to stay active and make the most of your summer!
Go for a Swim in Jasper
Cool off this summer at the Jasper Memorial Park Natatorium. Enjoy the Summer 2024 Open Swim hours, available Monday through Thursday from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, and Friday through Saturday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Admission is just $3 for children 11 and under, and $5 for those 12 and up. Children 11 and under must be accompanied by a person aged 15 or older, while those aged 12-14 can be signed in and out by an adult. Remember, all swimmers must wear a swimsuit, and children aged 3 and under must wear a swim diaper. For more information, call (205) 384-9617.
Take a Stroll in East Walker
Experience the serene natural beauty of East Walker County on the Horse Creek Trail. This simple, paved trail stretches just over two-and-a-half miles from Dora to Sumiton, passing behind the Horse Creek Golf Club, through scenic woods and small neighborhoods. Whether you’re looking to exercise, take a leisurely stroll, or simply enjoy the outdoors, Horse Creek Trail is the perfect spot!
Hit the Courts in Cordova
Get active on the recently completed pickleball and basketball courts in Cordova. These courts, funded by the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), were completed in 2023 and provide a great opportunity for residents to engage in friendly competition and stay fit. The courts are open to the public from sunrise to sunset each day. Players must bring their own equipment. For questions, contact Cordova City Hall at 205-483-9266
Cast a Line at Walker County Lake
Walker County Public Lake, located three miles southeast of Jasper off Highway 78, is open Monday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from sunrise to sunset. This 163-acre lake is home to largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, channel catfish, and hybrid striped bass. The lake features a boat ramp, two fishing piers, a pavilion, and a concession area offering bait, tackle, and snacks. State lake fishing licenses are available for purchase on-site.
