On Saturday, August 26, Camp COOL and Jasper Cornhole hosted the camp’s first-ever cornhole tournament. The event served as a fundraiser for the camp’s future campsite and was initially scheduled to take place at Restoration Hall but was moved to the Jasper Area Family Services Center gymnasium due to extreme outdoor temperatures.

Camp COOL (Children Overcoming Obstacles through Love) was founded in July 2013 to serve as a special needs summer camp for individuals aged six to 21 who have a primary diagnosis of cerebral palsy or spina bifida.

President of Camp COOL, Brittney Henson, says, “It was so much fun! We had the social division that people enjoyed playing in. Then we had the competitive division that seemed to go really well.”

Eight teams were in the competitive division and five in the social division, with several spectators coming to enjoy the fun. Pending the sale of the remaining t-shirts, the event will have raised $2400, nearly making the halfway mark of the event’s goal of $5000.

Brittney wants to thank the event’s sponsors who donated raffle prizes and the Jasper Area Family Service Center for providing their gym for the last-minute location change. Camp COOL plans to host another cornhole tournament in the Spring of 2024 to beat the heat and come closer to meeting their overall financial goal.

Anyone wishing to donate to Camp Cool can visit https://www.campcoolkids.org/ and click the “Donate” tab to give directly from the website.

“We’re pleased with the turnout, and we’re thankful for those who supported us and either bought shirts or donated to the raffle,” says Brittney. “And we’re just thankful for everyone who came out to support!” WL
