Yes, she has been to Bayou Seafood (‘that is the best sushi!”) and yes, Dr. Maddie Phillips loves being in Jasper.

Let’s get those questions and answers out of the way first.

The next thing you need to know is that Dr. Maddie is joining her father, Dr. John R. Phillips III, in Jasper at his orthodontics practice, PT Orthodontics, located right across the famous seafood restaurant on Walston Bridge Road in Jasper.

Describing her father as “truly one of the funniest, most positive, energetic people,” Dr. Maddie explains the mind meld that’s already been occurring since she’s joined the practice only two months ago. “Very often, we will be looking at cases and he’ll say, ‘well, it’s obvious,’ and he’ll look at me and I’ll say, ‘exactly.’”

A Birmingham native, Dr. Maddie graduated from Mountain Brook High School (Go Spartans!), before going to Ole Miss (Hotty Toddy!), where she graduated in 2012. She then chose the University of Louisville for dental school and attended the Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University for orthodontic residency.

Dr. Maddie says she always wanted a career in healthcare because she likes making a positive difference in people’s lives. She once considered dermatology but after shadowing several dermatologists, a question she posed led her in the direction of orthodontics. “I asked (the dermatologists) what was their favorite day and they all said surgery day,” she says. (At the time, she was also shadowing for her father at his orthodontics practice and remembered thinking that every day was her favorite day. Ultimately, that was an experience she did not want to miss out on.)

Now that she has actually joined him, she says she loves working alongside him and especially enjoys the fast-paced challenges that orthodontics provides.

“You get something different with every patient. Every case is a puzzle and you are trying to get the pieces to fit together and I love that aspect. It’s so rewarding to create beautiful smiles and see patient’s teeth and lives transformed.” she says.

Dr. Maddie also points to a wonderful staff at PT Orthodontics for making her transition to Jasper much easier. “Everybody is incredible,” she says. “The entire team is so talented, positive, and many have been there since I was a kid. Being able to walk in every day to people who are happy to be here with smiling faces who are encouraging—that is such a gift. We love what we do.”

Overall, Dr. Maddie is loving the richness that Jasper provides, not only with incredible people, but also the town’s unique flavor. “I love exploring Jasper and all it has to offer. My goal is to visit every restaurant—I may find another hidden gem like the Bayou Seafood!” WL
