Walker County has earned its reputation as a hub for sports enthusiasts. This tight-knit community has become synonymous with a fervent passion for football, drawing crowds eager to witness the gridiron battles unfold.
But beyond the realms of the football field, basketball has carved out its own significant niche in the hearts of Walker County residents. The Cordova Blue Devils, clinching the state championship in 2018, and the Parrish Tornadoes, narrowly missing out in 2013, showcase the basketball prowess that parallels the county’s football legacy. Local talents JB Beaty and Dray Willingham, inspired by these achievements, embarked on their basketball journey at Bevill State, a decision that would keep them close to their roots.

JB and Dray’s passion for basketball began at a young age, around seven or eight, when they each discovered their natural affinity for the sport. Despite dabbling in various other sports like swimming, gymnastics, football, and baseball, basketball emerged as their true calling. Guided by dedicated coaches and inspired by the indomitable spirit of past Walker County teams, the duo honed their skills. “My dad coached me growing up, and basketball became a bond between us going to watch games,” Dray says.
Approaching their spring 2023 high school graduations, JB from Jasper High School and Dray from Oakman High School, both faced hard decisions about their futures. Opting to stay close to home, Dray chose Bevill State, playing under the mentorship of local legend Billy Conner, turning down cross-country offers. JB soon followed suit. When discussing the local basketball scene and advice for aspiring players, JB notes, “I think players just have to stick to the grind and try to improve every day.” Dray adds, “Kids just need to be outside competing more and off their phones.” JB is interested in pursuing a career in HVAC after completing his studies at Bevill, while Dray is open to coaching in the future.
JB emphasizes sticking to the grind and continual improvement, while Dray underscores the importance of outdoor competition and disconnecting from digital distractions. Post-Bevill State, JB aspires to pursue a career in HVAC, while Dray remains open to the prospect of coaching.

As the Bevill State Bears navigate the final stages of the 2023-2024 basketball season, JB and Dray find themselves at the forefront, charged with delivering performances crucial for the team’s success. With the conference title still within reach, the duo recognizes the significance of every game. Despite facing challenges, the team maintains a strong sense of camaraderie and belief in their abilities. JB and Dray are resolute in focusing on the present, steering clear of dwelling on past defeats. Their strategy is clear-cut: work hard, stay focused, and maintain a positive mindset. Understanding that success demands dedication and commitment, they are confident that their unwavering effort will inspire the team to surpass their limits and achieve greatness.
JB and Dray are determined to leave no stone unturned in aiding the Bevill State Bears’ triumph. Fully aware of the obstacles ahead, they embrace the challenge with enthusiasm. “We have to stay hungry and keep fighting,” JB says.
With this mindset, the Bears have a genuine shot at securing the coveted conference title, setting the stage for a triumphant conclusion to the season. WL
