On December 14, local community members gathered at the Jasper Civic Center to recognize the efforts of the Walker County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). With a mission to involve individuals aged 55 and older in meaningful volunteer service, the program celebrated the impressive accomplishment of its 125 volunteers, who collectively contributed 19,277 hours of service to the community in 2023.
“RSVP Walker County has 44 volunteer stations, and our volunteers range in age from 55 to 93, but there is no age cap as you’re never too old to volunteer!” said Zan Brock, Walker County RSVP Coordinator. “We appreciate everything that our volunteers do and all of the ways they serve to make Walker County a better place.”

RSVP operates under the umbrella of Positive Maturity. This Birmingham-based organization focuses on enhancing the lives of older adults through social services and civic engagement. Currently serving Blount, Jefferson, Shelby, and Walker counties, Positive Maturity boasts over 1,200 active volunteers statewide who donate more than 150,000 hours of their time annually. These volunteers play a vital role in addressing local challenges such as illiteracy, crime, and the opioid crisis, while simultaneously promoting the active and independent living of older adults.
