JOB TITLE: Road and Bridge Supervisor

DEPARTMENT: Road and Bridge, Walker County

JOB SUMMARY: This position supervises and participates in road and bridge construction, maintenance and repair projects

MAJOR DUTIES:

Meets with Commissioner to receive general area assignments on specific work orders

Meets with subordinates to plan and assign work; inspects vehicles and equipment; loads tools and supplies; checks truck for damage or other problems at end of day

Oversees the maintenance of shop building and facilities

Oversees the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment

Operates bulldozer, front end loader, motor grader, backhoe and other equipment; clears land for new streets; loads dirt and stumps onto dump truck; levels road beds; shapes back slopes; shapes driveways; mixes base course; spreads gravel

Maintains and repairs streets, curbs, sidewalks and related appurtenances; builds spillways; shores up existing structures; builds new streets and drive entrances; patches potholes; delivers asphalt to work sites; removes damaged asphalt; shovels, packs and prepares new asphalt for rolling operation; cleans up patch site after completion; restores curbing after asphalt work; mixes and pours cement; retrieves forms; repairs sidewalks; lays forms and spreads cement; levels cement 

Hauls rubbish to dump and hauls waste material from job site; replaces signs, removes old signs, digs hole, mixes and pours cement, anchors new posts

Operates street sweeper

Supervises subordinates in departmental activities including establishing work goals and procedures, making work assignments and reviewing work for completeness and accuracy; orients new employees; approves travel, leave and compensatory time

Assists the County Engineer in planning construction of new bridges; supervises all facets of bridge construction and maintenance

Maintains inventory of parts and supplies

Performs other related duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

Knowledge of bridge and road construction materials, processes, and standards

Knowledge of county and department policies and procedures

Skill in the operation of job-related vehicles and equipment

Skill in the supervision of personnel

Skill in public and interpersonal relationships

Skill in oral and written communications

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Commissioner assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results 

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include Alabama Department of Transportation standards and specifications, department policies and procedures and equipment operation manuals. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application 

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related supervisory and road construction and maintenance duties. Heavy traffic and inclement weather may contribute to the complexity of the position 

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to supervise and participate in road and bridge construction, repair and maintenance projects. Success in this position contributes to the safety of county roadways 

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-works and members of the general public

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information; resolve problems; motivate or influence persons and provide services

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, bending, crouching, stooping, standing or walking. The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree or dexterity and distinguish between shades of color 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles or gloves 

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position has direct supervision over Heavy Equipment Operator 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education 

Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three year’s experience or service Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Alabama for the type of vehicle or equipment operated
