Chad Hayes says serving his community has always been about the people and relationships formed along the way. However, being recognized for that service came as a complete surprise.

Hayes was recently named the Chamber of Commerce of Walker County’s 2026 Volunteer of the Year, an honor he describes as both unexpected and humbling.

“I was totally surprised and caught off guard,” Hayes says. “I was not expecting it at all.”

Hayes first became involved with the Chamber approximately four years ago, seeking opportunities to become more engaged in the community as a local businessman. He was later invited to serve on the Chamber’s board, a position he has held for approximately three years.

During that time, he has been involved in numerous Chamber initiatives, including Leadership Walker County and Youth Leadership Walker County.

Chamber president Linda Lewis says Hayes’ dedication to both leadership programs has made a lasting impact.

“Whether he’s mentoring our rising youth leaders, helping guide adult participants, or rolling up his sleeves behind the scenes, Chad pours his heart into everything he does for our community,” she says. “He has a rare gift for making everyone feel supported and encouraged, and we are so appreciative of having him as a leader on these programs.”

Hayes says his commitment to service is rooted first and foremost in his faith. “The Lord calls and commands us to serve. He set the example of serving and talked about how He came to serve and not be served.”

Beyond that calling, Hayes says volunteering has brought him tremendous personal fulfillment, particularly through the friendships and partnerships he has developed with others who share his love for Jasper and Walker County.

“The community needs people who are engaged, involved, and passionate for it to thrive,” he says. “Those partnerships are what it takes for a community to really thrive.”

Despite the individual recognition, Hayes emphasizes that his accomplishments reflect the collective efforts of many people working to strengthen the community. “I got to be the one recognized this year, but it truly is a group and team effort.”

He also credits his family, his business partner Luke Knighton, and the office staff at the Knighton-Hayes Agency of Alfa Insurance for their support.

Hayes encourages anyone interested in becoming more involved in the community to seek out opportunities that align with their interests, whether through local nonprofits, civic clubs, or the Chamber.

“There are a lot of different opportunities in Jasper and Walker County to serve,” he says. “If you seek that out, you can definitely find multiple ways to serve.
