CARBON HILL, ALA. — Carbon Hill Drugs and the Addiction Prevention Coalition have partnered to install a new medication disposal drop box at the pharmacy, providing local residents with a safe and convenient way to dispose of unused and expired medications.
The initiative is designed to help prevent unused opioid medications from being diverted or misused and was made possible through Alabama Department of Mental Health Opioid Settlement funding.
The Addiction Prevention Coalition works to prevent substance use disorder through education, recovery support and community partnerships. Through a grant awarded by the Alabama Department of Mental Health using Opioid Settlement funds, the coalition is helping install medication disposal drop boxes in pharmacies throughout Central Alabama.

“We decided to install the medication drop box because we see the importance of providing a safe, convenient way for our community to dispose of unused medications, ultimately helping to reduce the risk of misuse and keeping our homes safer,” said McClain Burrough of Carbon Hill Drugs.
Safe medication disposal can help keep expired and unused opioids from being accessed by individuals for whom they were not prescribed, reducing opportunities for misuse and helping protect families and communities.
“Medication disposal boxes are a critical tool in our toolbox to prevent addiction,” said Nichole Dawsey, executive director of the Addiction Prevention Coalition. “It is true community prevention at work, highlighting the power of collaboration and partnership in addressing this public health issue.”
The new medication disposal drop box at Carbon Hill Drugs is part of the Addiction Prevention Coalition’s broader effort to expand access to safe medication disposal options across Central Alabama. WL
