The City of Cordova is preparing to celebrate America’s 250th birthday with an Independence Day packed with activities for residents and visitors of all ages.
The celebration will take place Saturday, July 4, at Indian Head Mill Park, with festivities scheduled from noon until 10 p.m. The event is part of Walker County’s observance of America 250, the nationwide commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The festival will open at noon with the national anthem performed by the Cordova High School Band. Vendors, food trucks, a children’s zone with inflatables, yard games, and other family activities will be available throughout the day.
Carriage rides will be available from noon until 5 p.m., offering visitors a different perspective on historic downtown Cordova.
At 1 p.m., the community will pause for a special recognition ceremony honoring veterans and their families. All veterans are invited to participate and are asked to register at the Cordova Economic and Industrial Development Authority tent by 12:30 p.m.
A patriotic parade will begin at 2 p.m. at Cordova High School and continue through the city’s streets. Residents are encouraged to decorate their vehicles with red, white, and blue for the occasion. Parade entries may include UTVs, golf carts, go-karts, side-by-sides, tractors, horses, vintage cars, and other vehicles.
Prizes will be awarded to the first-, second-, and third-place entries judged to have the best decorations. A cruise-in will begin on Main Street following the parade, allowing participants to continue displaying their vehicles.
At 3 p.m., organizers will gather attendees in front of the pavilion stage at Indian Head Mill Park for a large community photo commemorating America’s 250th birthday. Participants are encouraged to dress in red, white, and blue.
Live entertainment will begin immediately afterward, with the M-80s taking the stage at 3 p.m., followed by Rock Mob at 7 p.m.
The celebration will conclude with a fireworks show at 9 p.m., lighting the sky in honor of the nation’s milestone anniversary. WL
