In his first months as mayor, Josh Gates says the focus has been to build on Jasper’s momentum, stay intentional, and keep the city moving forward in a thoughtful, responsible way.

In this Walker Leader Q&A, Gates reflects on early priorities, progress already taking shape, and the long-term vision guiding his administration, from infrastructure and economic development to quality of life and community input.

Looking back on your first few months as mayor, what stands out to you most about the role so far?

What stands out most is the importance of being intentional from the start. Jasper is in a season of real opportunity, and it is our responsibility to leverage that opportunity into meaningful, lasting results. From the beginning, the focus has been on making sure we are aligned as a city and setting a foundation that allows us to move forward in a steady and responsible way.

It is also worth saying what an honor it is to serve a community like Jasper. This is a place with strong people, a deep sense of pride, and a willingness to work together, and that makes this role incredibly meaningful.

What were your top priorities coming into office, and how have those taken shape in these first few months?

From the beginning, our focus has been on building on the momentum already underway and taking the next steps as a city. That means strengthening infrastructure, supporting economic growth, and creating opportunities for families and businesses to thrive.

Over the past few months, we have started putting structure around those priorities. We are working to align our efforts so that infrastructure, workforce development, and quality of life all move forward together. We have also taken steps to begin addressing more complex challenges, including homelessness, in a way that is organized and built for long-term impact.

What are some key accomplishments from your first months in office that you’re especially proud of?

We are proud of the foundation we have put in place and the direction we have set.

The development of the Homelessness Response Framework and the formation of the Homelessness Response Steering Committee is a meaningful step forward. That work is now structured, coordinated, and gaining traction in a way that is both responsible and focused on long-term solutions.

We have continued to build momentum in economic development and workforce training by working alongside local partners, state partners, and national leadership to leverage opportunities that position Jasper for long-term growth. That includes support for the Heman Drummond Center of Innovation and ongoing efforts to strengthen infrastructure, workforce pipelines, and recruitment.

We are also proud of our city employees. The City of Jasper receiving the ALM Silver Risk Management Award speaks to the professionalism, discipline, and daily commitment of our team. That recognition reflects the way our employees serve this community and take pride in their work.

What challenges or surprises have you encountered since taking office?

One of the biggest challenges is making sure we stay focused on long-term outcomes while still addressing day-to-day needs.

There are always immediate issues that need attention, but the most important work we are doing right now requires planning, coordination, and discipline. Staying committed to that approach is important if we want to see lasting results.

What have you learned so far about the biggest needs or concerns of Jasper residents?

People want to see continued forward movement, but they also want to see Jasper become an even better place to live day to day.

Recreational opportunities are a big part of that. Families want more options, more spaces to gather, and more ways to enjoy their community. That is something we are focused on as we continue to expand opportunities that enhance quality of life.

We are also committed to actively seeking input from our residents as we shape the FOCUS 2030 Strategic Plan. The community survey at www.jaspercity.com/survey is a key part of that process and helps ensure we are listening and aligning our priorities with the people we serve.

What feedback have you heard most often from the community, and how is that shaping your approach moving forward?

The feedback we have heard has reinforced the importance of being thoughtful and disciplined in how we move forward.

There is an expectation that we continue to build on the momentum that has already been created, while also taking advantage of opportunities to bring additional resources into our community. That includes being proactive in how we position the city for funding and partnerships that support long-term improvements.

We are committed to listening and applying what we hear. I know what Josh Gates wants, but that is not what needs to drive our decisions. Our responsibility is to represent the citizens of Jasper and ensure that what we are doing reflects the needs and priorities of the community as a whole. The community survey at www.jaspercity.com/survey is one of the ways we are working to do that, and I encourage every resident who has not taken it to take a few minutes to share their input.

As you move further into your term, what are your biggest goals or areas of focus for Jasper?

The focus moving forward is on continuing to build responsibly and strategically.

That means advancing infrastructure improvements, strengthening economic development efforts, and continuing to invest in workforce opportunities. It also means placing a greater emphasis on quality of life, including recreational opportunities that make Jasper a place where families want to stay and grow.

We have a strong foundation in place, and our goal is to leverage that into long-term success for our community.

What do you hope residents already see in your leadership, and what do you hope they’ll see more of in the months ahead?

We hope residents see a leadership approach that is steady, focused, and committed to doing what is best for Jasper over the long term.

We also want people to know that we are listening. This city should reflect the people who live here and what they want to see from their community and their government.

In the months ahead, we hope residents continue to see progress and a clear direction, and that they see we are building something that is thoughtful, aligned, and built to last.
