CodeRED Helps Walker County Residents Stay Alert

Words by Jayna Vance

Looking to stay up to date with local emergencies and events in Walker County? The Walker County Commission and local safety officials are encouraging individuals and businesses to sign up for the CodeRED informational alert system.

CodeRED alerts users of events or emergencies as they occur, and officials believe it is the most effective method to keep its citizens informed.

Walker County EMA Director Regina Myers explains why registering for CodeRED is so crucial, saying, “Users can expect to receive alerts by the National Weather Service, on potential traffic issues, and on more general information like late garbage truck arrivals and early courthouse dismissals.”

The goal of CodeRED is to warn users of any events, emergencies, or dangers in the area, and to provide instructions if needed. Notifications of extreme weather events, boil water notices, and evacuations are just a few examples of what users can expect from the app.

Myers emphasizes the importance of staying informed, for both those in the community and those elsewhere.

“We just want to keep everyone in the know,” says Myers. “We also encourage those who live elsewhere who have family members in Walker County to download the app and stay up to date on the latest for their families’ sake.”

Signing up is easy and can be done online or by text message. Either download the CodeRED Mobile App from the Google Play or App Store or text WalkerAL to 99411 to receive a registration link. The Walker County Commission encourages all citizens and businesses to register.

“It’s so easy,” Myers says. “After signing up, users can select the way they want to receive alerts, whether that be by cell phone, email, landline, or text message. And then select the type of alerts you would like to receive – emergency, general, or both.”
