Between homework, sports, club meetings, and after-school jobs, students are often booked solid, and teachers are just as busy keeping up with lessons, grading, and extracurriculars. So when Spring Break rolls around, it’s a well-earned chance for students and educators to rest, recharge, and maybe even explore something new.

If you’re staying local this year, there’s no shortage of ways to make the most of your time off right here in Walker County. Here are some ideas to fill your Spring Break calendar.

Stay Active

Spring Break is a great time to rest, but it’s also a chance to get moving. Whether you’re into walking, swimming, playing sports, or just enjoying time outdoors, Walker County offers plenty of ways to stay active while soaking up some sunshine.

Horse Creek Trail

This simple, paved trail stretches just over two-and-a-half miles from Dora to Sumiton, winding behind Horse Creek Golf Club and through wooded areas and small neighborhoods. It’s ideal for walking, jogging, or a peaceful afternoon stroll through East Walker County’s natural beauty.

Pickleball Courts

Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and you can give it a try right here at home. Public courts are available in Jasper and Cordova from sunrise to sunset. Just bring your own equipment and get ready for some friendly competition.

Local Parks

Walker County parks offer a range of amenities for all ages.

  • Gamble Park (Gamble Avenue, Jasper) and North Jasper Park (3601 Coral Blvd) are open daily for casual outdoor play and exercise.
  • Dora Park features playground equipment and wide-open spaces perfect for family fun.
  • Memorial Park (610 10th Ave, Jasper) is Jasper’s oldest and largest park, home to pavilions, playgrounds, a pond, multiple sports fields, Swann Gym, and the Memorial Park Natatorium. Its APEX Playground is designed to be accessible to children of all abilities, and the walking track offers a paved path through trees and around the pond, great for walking or jogging.

Lakes – Walker County Public Lake & Smith Lake

While not every day calls for full-on adventure, a peaceful afternoon by the water is always time well spent. Walker County Lake and Smith Lake are both great places to fish, walk, or enjoy the view.

Hit The Golf Course

For golf lovers or those wanting to try something new, Horse Creek Golf Course in Dora offers a scenic, well-kept 18-hole course open to the public. Play a full round or nine holes, or stop by the driving range to work on your swing. Horse Creek also features a snack bar and a shop stocked with gear. Call 205-648-1499 to book a tee time.

Plan a Downtown Shopping Day

Downtown Jasper is full of local charm and plenty to explore. From shops like Bernard’s Store for Men and Paper Places Bookshop to boutiques like Carol’s, Gibson Girl, and Lavish, it’s easy to spend a whole afternoon browsing and treating yourself.

Try Trivia Night

Tallulah Brewing Company hosts regular events, from live music to themed trivia nights. If you’re in town on Thursday, March 27, stop by at 7 p.m. for “2010s Movies” trivia night. Pair it with one of their signature brews and some food from the grille, and you’ve got yourself a fun, family-friendly night out!
