WALKER COUNTY, ALA. – Walker County is continuing its participation in the nationwide America250 commemoration with upcoming events celebrating the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
The county launched its America250 celebration in April 2025 with “Two Lights for Tomorrow” commemorations and has continued with initiatives like community cleanups. Additional events are planned throughout Walker County to recognize the nation’s history, celebrate local communities, and encourage residents to look toward the future together.
Cordova’s Independence Day Celebration will be held July 4 from noon to 10 p.m. at Indian Head Mill Park, with a fireworks show beginning at 9 p.m. The celebration will include live music, vendors, food trucks, a kids’ zone with inflatables and a water slide, history tents, and a clay-cast replica of the Liberty Bell.
On July 8, a reading of the Declaration of Independence will be held on the steps of the Walker County Courthouse, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the first public reading of the document. The reading will take place at 5 p.m., corresponding to the original 6 p.m. EDT reading time, as communities across the country read the Declaration of Independence together under the theme “One People, One Declaration, One America.”
Walker County Administrator Amy Frederickson said the America250 celebrations offer communities across Walker County an opportunity to come together.
“I think this is a really nice occasion for all of us to come together to share ideas and get a clear impression of how the county can move forward together, with all of the various municipalities and towns as one,” Frederickson said.
Additional America250 activities are also being developed, including a Tour of Walker County experience that will invite participants to discover local history, community landmarks, and meaningful sites throughout the county. More details about the tour, including participating locations and how residents can take part, will be announced at a later date.
Walker County encourages residents and visitors to participate in the upcoming America250 events as communities throughout the nation commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States. These celebrations provide an opportunity for the county’s municipalities, communities and citizens to come together, celebrate their shared heritage and look toward the future as one county.
