Northwest Alabama Mental Health Center (Northwest) is proud to announce the hiring of Melinda Abbott as the organization’s chief financial officer.
Abbott brings with her more than two decades of experience in accounting and financial management, along with a deep understanding of why the organization’s work matters.
Abbott, whose career has included leadership roles in manufacturing, energy, and supply chain, said the opportunity to join Northwest represented a meaningful intersection between the work she has long excelled in and a mission that resonates with her on a personal level.
She shared that she grew up surrounded by mental illness and substance use, experiences that shaped her understanding of how vital services like those offered at Northwest can be, not only for clients but for their families as well. In her short time with the organization, she said she has already been struck by the compassion of its leadership and the breadth of services Northwest provides across the region.
“I had no idea before I came here just how much Northwest actually does,” she said, noting that many people may pass by one of the organization’s buildings without realizing the scope of care happening inside. From mental health services to support for individuals with intellectual disabilities and other needs, Abbott said the organization’s work reaches people across all stages of life.
That mission, she said, is part of what makes coming to work each day feel different from any role she has held before.
Northwest’s mission and values center on providing accessible, high-quality mental health services while maintaining integrity, professionalism, ethical practice, and a commitment to continuous improvement in compassionate care. As CFO, Abbott said she wants her work to support that mission by strengthening the organization’s operational stability, equipping teams with meaningful financial insight, and ensuring resources are used as effectively as possible in service to clients and the community.
In practical terms, that means leading the business office in all things financial, from accounts payable and receivable to payroll, billing, and monthly financial reporting for the board. It also means helping Northwest operate wisely as a nonprofit, seeking opportunities to reduce expenses, improve efficiency, and make the most of available resources while supporting a wide range of services and facilities, including residential facilities.
Born in Indiana, Abbott moved to Pennsylvania at age 12 and later came to Jasper in 2006. She earned an associate degree in business administration, then completed a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Athens State University and a master’s degree in accounting with a concentration in leadership and financial services from Liberty University. Throughout that time, she worked full-time while continuing her education, building a career spanning more than 20 years.
She also navigated much of that season as a young mother, an experience she said helped shape the passion and seriousness she brings to her work today.
Outside of the office, Abbott’s life is centered on faith and family. She and her husband, Wayne, have been married for nearly 19 years and share a blended family of four children, ages 12 to 27, and two grandchildren. Their household is active and busy, with much of family life revolving around their children’s school, sports, and career pursuits. Abbott said she and her husband are also deeply involved in church and ministry opportunities. WL
