Walker County residents will have several opportunities to pitch in and help beautify their communities as local cleanup initiatives get underway this April.
At its regular meeting on March 16, the Walker County Commission designated April 11, 2026, as Walker County Cleanup Day, recognizing the effort as an America 250 Community Service Event. The designation aligns with cleanup efforts already being organized in municipalities across the county, including Cordova and Carbon Hill.
The countywide observance is meant to encourage residents, volunteers, civic groups, churches, schools, and local governments to work together to improve neighborhoods, public spaces, and shared community areas.
In Cordova, the town’s annual cleanup day is scheduled for Saturday, April 11, beginning at 8 a.m. at Cordova City Hall and continuing until about noon. The event will include trash, brush, and limb pick-up, as well as river and creek cleanup. Gloves and bags will be provided for volunteers.
The one-day event will take place alongside a larger month-long effort led each year by Mayor Jeremy Pate.
In Carbon Hill, city leaders are taking a similar month-long approach with the April Community Yard Cleanup Initiative. Throughout April, the city will coordinate a community beautification effort to improve the appearance and safety of local neighborhoods.
Residents who are elderly, disabled, or experiencing financial hardship and need help with yard cleanup may request assistance by signing up at Carbon Hill City Hall. Volunteers will help with yard debris removal and light outdoor cleanup.
City leaders are also calling on volunteers from across the community to get involved. Organizers say individuals can serve in a variety of roles, including laborers, supply coordinators, and registration assistants. Businesses are encouraged to contribute supplies, services, or expertise to strengthen the effort, while schools, churches, civic groups, and other organizations are invited to take part to serve the community and, in some cases, earn volunteer hours.
Those interested in requesting assistance or registering to volunteer in Carbon Hill may contact Carbon Hill City Hall at 170 2nd Avenue NW or call (205) 924-4411. WL
