Bevill State Community College (BSCC) continues to be a trusted training provider for individuals seeking a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), offering three flexible pathways designed to fit the needs of students, employers, and independent learners.
For decades, BSCC has helped prepare qualified drivers for one of the nation’s most in-demand careers. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are about 240,300 openings projected each year over the next decade for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers due to industry growth and the need to replace retiring drivers. These careers are consistently identified as high-wage, high-demand in Alabama.
Traditional CDL Training
BSCC’s nationally recognized, industry-preferred model has been in place since 1967, combining six weeks of behind-the-wheel instruction with classroom training. Day and night class options make it easier for students to fit training into their schedules. Compared to private CDL schools, BSCC’s tuition remains one of the most cost-effective in the region.

Workforce CDL Training
BSCC works directly with business and industry to design CDL programs that meet employer needs and comply with all state and federal regulations. Partners have included Birmingham Water Works Board, Alabama Power, and municipalities such as Gardendale.

Skills for Success Pathway
Ideal for independent learners, this option begins with online modules through the Alabama Community College System, followed by hands-on driving. Dual enrollment opportunities allow 18-year-old high school students to begin CDL training. There is no cost for Skills for Success behind-the-wheel training, though participants are responsible for limited expenses to qualify for phase two behind-the-wheel. Also, Skills for Success is available to individuals, as well as businesses and municipalities. Nelson Brothers, City of Hamilton, Walker County, and Fayette County have all enrolled employees in this training option.

Funding
Bevill State’s Commercial Driver Training program is supported through multiple funding options, making it accessible to a wide range of students. Scholarship funding is available, and training is free for qualifying WIOA participants, Skills for Success enrollees, and students receiving Adult Education services. For students paying out of pocket, Bevill State offers one of the most affordable commercial driver training opportunities in Alabama.
Meeting Students Where They Are
“Bevill State is committed to providing education and training opportunities that are both accessible and relevant,” said Dr. Joel Hagood, President of BSCC. “Our CDL training pathways are designed to meet students where they are in life, offering flexible options that fit individual circumstances. By doing so, we not only help individuals launch or advance their careers, but we also strengthen the workforce and contribute to the economic vitality of the communities we serve.”
