Doug Sizemore didn’t originally set out to become a teacher. While earning his undergraduate degree, he discovered a passion for biology. However, it wasn’t until graduate school, when he began leading freshman biology labs, that he realized how much he enjoyed helping others understand the subject he loved. What began as a terrifying experience soon became a calling, as Doug found deep satisfaction in watching students connect with the material and develop a fascination of their own.
After earning his master’s in biology from Samford University, Doug spent a few years working outside of education before returning to the classroom. He began teaching as an adjunct at Jefferson State Community College, but when he saw an opportunity to apply at a newly forming college, Bevill State, he took a chance. That decision became the start of a decades-long career shaping the minds of future scientists, nurses, and professionals.
Today, Doug serves as a Biology Instructor and Division Chair on the Jasper Campus. His teaching philosophy is rooted in helping students think critically about the world around them: “During my time with Bevill, I have always wanted to get students to learn to think critically about their own life, using biology as a way to practice that process. If students use critical thinking skills, then they will realize that nothing in biology (life) is cut and dry. It provides a wider perspective. Hopefully, this view will allow students to see life as it is, not just how they want it to be.”
Doug is a proud graduate of Brewer State Junior College (AS, Biology), the University of North Alabama (BS, Environmental Biology), Samford University (MS, Biology), UAB (MA, Education), and the University of Alabama (EdD, Education). His dedication to learning and student growth is what makes him such a valuable part of the Bevill State family.
Congratulations to Doug Sizemore on being named the Outstanding Faculty Award recipient for the Jasper Campus!
