Name: Sam Watts
How long have you lived in Jasper: I was born and raised in Jasper. After graduating from Walker High School, I spent four years at Auburn University, followed by ten years of military service outside Alabama. My wife and I moved back to Jasper to raise our family, and I’ve now lived here a total of 34 years.
Family: I’ve been blessed to be married to my high school sweetheart, Leigh, for nearly 20 years this June. She’s my best friend and biggest supporter. We have two sons, Jacob and Levi, who attend Maddox Middle School. We’re also proud to still have both of our parents living here in Jasper.
Why are you running for City Council?
My decision to run for City Council is rooted in the encouragement I’ve received from others who believe I would be a fair and effective representative for District 3 – and for Jasper as a whole. It would be an honor to serve this community and build on the momentum created by those who came before me. I’m proud to call Jasper home, and I want to help guide thoughtful growth and positive change so that future generations can be just as proud.
What key issues will be your top priorities if elected?
Attracting quality jobs and new business opportunities to Jasper; Expanding youth sports and revitalizing local parks and recreational spaces; Supporting growth in dining, entertainment, and family-friendly activities; Encouraging active lifestyles and civic involvement for all ages

What personal or professional experiences have best prepared you for this role?
I believe listening and respectful conversation are key to good leadership. My time in the Marine Corps taught me that no mission succeeds without teamwork and input from others. I plan to bring that same mindset to this role – working alongside city leaders, community members, and subject matter experts to serve Jasper well. As a business owner, I also understand the importance of careful financial decision-making. I plan to apply that same fiscal responsibility to the city’s budget and operations.
What’s one thing you love about Jasper?
The people. Jasper is one of those rare places where you can strike up a genuine conversation just about anywhere, at a restaurant, in church, or even in line at the Probate Office. Sometimes all it takes is being willing to start a conversation.
Favorite local event, spot, or tradition:
My family and I enjoy downtown dining every week, but my favorite event has to be the Foothills Festival. We look forward to it every year. I always run into someone I haven’t seen in years and get to catch up while listening to great music. Every time I think they can’t top the year before, Zach and his team amaze me again. Something others might be surprised to know about you:
I let Toby Keith shoot a .50cal off my helicopter, shared a Gatorade with Chuck Norris, and mistakenly dumped a plate of eggs on Prince Harry’s feet. All good stories and more I can share once you get to know me.
