Name: Jenny Brown Short

How long you’ve lived in Jasper: I was born and raised in Jasper. After spending time away for school and work, I returned home in 2012 and have been actively involved in the community ever since.

Family: My family settled in Jasper five generations ago. I am married to Mike Short, a fellow Jasper native and retired Walker County Engineer. I have two daughters, Abby (David) and Chesley (Daniel), a stepson, Will, and four wonderful grandchildren.

Why are you running for City Council?
I am running for re-election because I care deeply about the future of Jasper. I want to continue building on the progress we’ve made and use my experience to help guide our city forward in thoughtful and impactful ways. I believe that strong, consistent leadership rooted in local involvement is key to maintaining our momentum.

What key issues will be your top priorities if elected?
My priorities include thoughtful planning and strategic investment in infrastructure and quality-of-life projects, continued revitalization of downtown, and responsible budgeting. I’m also committed to improving our outdoor recreation opportunities and facilities, as well as strengthening partnerships that enhance educational, recreational, and economic opportunities across Jasper.

What personal or professional experiences have best prepared you for this role?
My career in healthcare, leadership in community organizations, and service on multiple local and regional boards have equipped me to be an effective collaborator and decision-maker. I’ve proudly served on the Jasper City Council and bring years of hands-on experience, including work on the Sherer Auditorium renovation, zoning and planning commission, and outdoor recreation initiatives.

What’s one thing you love about Jasper?
The people. Jasper is full of generous, kind, and passionate individuals who want to see our community thrive.

Favorite local event, spot, or tradition: Art in the Park is one of my favorites. It’s a wonderful celebration of local artists and creativity, and I love seeing the community come together in such a vibrant way.

Something others might be surprised to know about you: During college, I spent a summer working as a housekeeper on a guest ranch just outside of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. It was there that I learned to fly fish and kayak—experiences that sparked a lifelong love of the outdoors. That passion inspired my work on projects like Walker County Waterways, which created a series of kayak and canoe launches that provide more outdoor recreation opportunities for local families.
