This week, the city of Jasper mourns the loss of Mayor David O’Mary, a dedicated leader who left an indelible mark on the community. Born in Jasper and having spent decades serving its people, Mayor O’Mary’s commitment to education, economic development, and community service shaped the city in profound ways.
The following is a compilation of quotes from elected officials and other community leaders reflecting on Mayor O’Mary’s life and legacy.
“I’ve known David since I was 5 or 6 years old. I remember going to John O’Mary’s grandmother’s house on Alabama Avenue and playing and admiring the 4-wheelers. Then playing Little League baseball where David was one of our coaches, to banking with him at First National when I became a teenager, to being neighbors for the last 15 years. Just last week, David entrusted me to use his old Ford tractor to plow up his turnip patch, and if you knew David at all, he didn’t let just anybody use his tractor. While on the phone, he said, “Don’t forget to wiggle the low-range gear. It can be cantankerous at times while trying to start.” Then he said, “We need to split some Southridge hickory and cook a pot of chili over the fire.” He always ended every conversation with, “If you need me, you know where I am.” Had I known last Wednesday would be our last conversation, I might have made it a little longer.”

“Mayor O’Mary often told me, “We want to do what is best for Jasper.” He led the city through some of the most challenging and most prosperous times in its history. Mayor O’Mary loved the people he served and the employees he worked alongside. I will always be appreciative of his friendship and will miss our conversations about the future of Jasper. My sincere condolences to his family and friends as we honor the life of a true community servant.”
– Alabama State Representative Matt Woods
“David O’Mary was the best friend Jasper ever had. His concern and care for the City were always his first concerns. He loved to hunt, fish, and garden, but it came second to any need the City might have. In 2016, I did not realize what our city could be. He used every opportunity to improve and upgrade our surroundings. David always looked for ways to encourage local businesses and bring new industries to Jasper. He was always willing to listen to both sides of an opinion and make the best decision he felt would benefit the City. He was tough but fair with all his employees. I sure will miss those watermelons, cantaloupes, and tomatoes!”

“It saddens me today to announce the passing of Mayor David O’Mary. Although he and I have always enjoyed a good working relationship, over the last 8 years, I have grown to regard him as a friend. We built a relationship on mutual respect and dedication to the citizens of Jasper. The mayor offered his unwavering support to anything that would benefit the people who live and work in this city, leading us through difficult times. Please pray for his family, friends, and employees as we grieve this tremendous loss.”
– Jasper Police Chief J.C. Poe
“David was a longtime personal friend and also a friend of the Commission. It was a pleasure working with him throughout the years, both in business and through our capacities in city and county government. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
– Walker County Commission Chairman Steve Miller
“David O’Mary’s leadership and unwavering commitment to Jasper during his time as our mayor helped shepherd our community to unprecedented success and growth. He loved Jasper, and he always worked diligently to make our community better. Jasper’s future is brighter because of David O’Mary, and I am grateful for his service. Mitsy and I send our prayers and heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time. He will be greatly missed.”
– Alabama Senate President Pro Tempore Greg Reed
