Walker County 4-H is hosting its annual Chick Chain Show and Silent Auction on Saturday, October 12, 2024, during the Indian Head Harvest Fest in downtown Cordova, Alabama.
The event begins at 1:00 PM and will feature local 4-H members showcasing chickens they’ve raised, including breeds like Easter Eggers, Barred Plymouth Rocks, and Rhode Island Reds.
The Chick Chain Project helps young 4-H members learn responsibility and basic animal care through raising poultry.
The silent auction is a great chance for community members to support these youth and bid on some of the chickens they’ve worked hard to raise. Proceeds from the auction will help sustain 4-H programs in the area.
Alabama 4-H reaches over 118,000 young people across the state, offering a variety of programs through clubs, school activities, and camps. The 2023-2024 club year includes 2,038 active 4-H clubs statewide, showing how widely the program serves Alabama’s youth.
In Walker County alone, more than 900 youth participate in 4-H programs. These include in-school enrichment programs, summer camps, and community-based clubs. This year, over 1,300 kids from around Alabama attended 4-H camps, with financial assistance available to make these opportunities accessible for all.
Alabama 4-H relies on volunteers, with over 4,700 people contributing more than 63,000 hours in the last year. In Walker County, volunteers support activities like the Chick Chain Show and help provide educational experiences that positively impact local youth.
Studies show that 4-H members are more likely to give back to their communities, make healthy choices, and engage in STEM activities. Alabama 4-H aims to continue fostering these positive outcomes through its programs and events.
