Curry High School recently celebrated the grand opening of its new, cutting-edge athletic facility.

The impressive building, located behind the school, transforms a former workshop into a hub for student-athletes.

Formerly home to Rice Lake Weighing Systems, known globally for its weight-related products and process-control equipment, the facility now houses an indoor football practice field, a weight room, batting cages, and a golf simulator, providing comprehensive resources for various sports.

Principal Eric Woodley reflected on the transformation, saying, “When we first came in here, this place was filled with cranes, conveyor belts, welding stations, paint stations, and all kinds of metal machinery. What you see now is a testament to the hard work that the Curry community puts in every day for our kids.”

Walker County Superintendent Dennis Willingham highlighted the collaborative effort behind the project. “This has been a total team effort from the start – administrators, coaches, faculty, and staff, and especially the stakeholders in the community. We had several meetings to ensure we were united on a vision.”

Willingham said there was a point in the facility’s development when associated parties believed the construction would have to be split into phases, but through help from Senator Greg Reed and Representative Matt Woods, funding was secured to complete the entire project.

Rep. Woods expressed his excitement about the facility: “To see the community support this effort is truly amazing. This will be a huge opportunity for students of Curry High School to develop their skills and have sustained success in their athletic programs for many years to come.”

Student-athletes began utilizing the facility in early June and continue to gear up for the upcoming school year. WL
