Step into Sanctuary on 5th Avenue in Jasper, and you’ll find a space where history meets modern design.
The original home to Sixth Avenue Church of Christ and later Pilgrim Nazarene Church, followed by a Spanish-speaking church, this beautiful building has been reborn as a stylish Airbnb and well-appointed event space.
Managed by Kendra Brown and her project partner, Nina O’Rear Soileau, Sanctuary preserves its historical charm while offering contemporary comfort and sophistication.
While the exterior of Sanctuary maintains its church-like appearance, the inside tells a different story.
“We basically gutted the building,” Kendra explains. “We updated the electrical system and installed new flooring, replacing the theater-style floor with a level one.”
The interior, designed by William Tumbleson, features striking elements, including a beautiful mural on the foyer ceiling and ultra-wide molding to enhance the ceiling height.
“There are so many interesting details to look at,” Kendra says. “But even with all these elements, it still feels very relaxing and comfortable.”
The name ‘Sanctuary’ reflects the space’s history as a church and its renewed purpose as a place of rest.
“We chose the name for a couple of reasons. First, because the building originally was a church, and second, because one of the many meanings of the word ‘sanctuary’ is ‘place of rest,’ and that’s exactly what we want this to be,” says Kendra.
Sanctuary’s overall design can be described as modern and sophisticated, with a touch of eclectic charm.
Clean lines, a neutral color palette, and stainless steel appliances create a sleek, contemporary feel.
High-quality materials like marble and polished metals add sophistication, while vibrant artwork and unique decor bring personality and an eclectic charm to the space.
Sister Mary Frances, a mule statue from the Walker County Arts Alliance, welcomes guests outside, adding to the property’s charm.
Sanctuary offers two large bedrooms, three full baths, a Murphy Bed, an open-concept living area, a full kitchen, a wet bar, a laundry room, and a charming outdoor entertainment area, ensuring guests have everything needed for an incredibly comfortable and unforgettable stay.
Sanctuary is designed for versatility, making it the perfect space for a peaceful getaway or any special event.
“We want people to know that whatever their vision, we can make it happen here at Sanctuary,” Kendra says. WL
