The Jasper City Board of Education recently held a reception to honor long-time board member Walker Wilson. Eleven years ago, Walker joined the board in place of former member Pat Nelson. A product of Jasper City schools, Walker knew he wanted to be more involved when his two children were entering the school system.

Walker served the board in many capacities, including several years as Vice Chairman. He was part of many changes, including reclassifying the schools and building and renaming what is now Jasper High School. He attended board meetings, sporting events, and graduation ceremonies, and closely communicated with teachers, students, and parents to be a voice for those directly affected by the board’s decisions.

At the end of the 2023-2024 school year, Walker resigned from his position, prompted by the sale of his house in the district he represented for Jasper City Schools. He reflects on his time in this position and the people around him who made it worthwhile.

“I tell people it’s the hardest job I ever had, but the most rewarding. I’m prouder of my time on that board than anything else I’ve done, alongside my regular work. It was trying at times, but at the end of the day, I knew I was going to do whatever was in the best interest of the kids, and that made it easier,” says Walker. “It was special to be eyes and ears for the community and to serve on an amazing board of people who genuinely care. It’s hard to be leaving, but I can look back and say I’m proud of my time there. It was rarely easy, but always worth it.” WL
