The Bridge Educational Philanthropy hosted its second annual Juneteenth Celebration of Excellence Luncheon at the Jasper Civic Center on Saturday, June 15.

The event commemorates a day of profound significance in American history. Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19, marks the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It also honors those who have significantly impacted the local community.

This year’s luncheon honored three beloved local educators: Mrs. Mable McNealey, Dr. Mary Slaughter, and Mrs. Queen Tarvin. Each of these women is a native of Walker County and a product of area schools. Together, they have over 100 years of experience in education, leadership, and volunteerism within the Walker County community.

Dr. Kristian Douglas, Executive Director of The Bridge, said, “Today’s luncheon serves a dual purpose: first, to celebrate Juneteenth, recognizing the struggles and triumphs of our ancestors who paved the way to freedom and the continuous fight for civil rights—a day to honor their resilience, courage, and unyielding spirit. Second, to honor three exceptional Black women educators whose dedication and contributions have significantly impacted our community. These women embody the spirit of Juneteenth through their commitment to education, empowerment, and the uplifting of our youth. Their work not only enriches the minds of our future leaders but also reinforces the importance of representation and cultural heritage in education. Their stories are a testament to the power of perseverance and the transformative impact of education.”

Attendees also heard from guest speaker Dr. Jeremy C. Kirk, Assistant Dean for Access and Engagement at the Tickle College of Engineering at The University of Tennessee. Dr. Kirk encouraged attendees to reflect daily on how they might contribute to systems and environments that lead to marginalization and barriers to success for those around them.

Sponsors of this year’s luncheon include: Patriot Jacks Landworx, Walker Women’s Specialists, Jasper Main Street, Joseph Carter Realty, The Family of Shirley Mitchell, All Four Real Estate, Wright’s Chapel Church, the Walker Area Community Foundation, and Bevill State Community College.
