On Tuesday, May 21, 2024, the East Walker County Chamber of Commerce hosted its 48th Annual Banquet at Bevill State Community College in Sumiton. This event celebrated the Chamber’s achievements over the past year and set the stage for future initiatives.

Keynote speaker Greg Reed, President Pro Tempore of the Alabama Senate, provided valuable insights into the recent 2024 Alabama Legislative Session. Born and raised in Walker County, Reed, who currently resides in Jasper, delivered a comprehensive overview of several key legislative measures.

Reed highlighted the Parents Right to Know Act, which aims to increase transparency in education. He also discussed Anti-Ballot Harvesting Measures designed to ensure election integrity. In addition, Reed covered legislative advancements concerning in-vitro fertilization, property tax assessment caps, and new tax credits for childcare and housing. The Alabama Workforce Transformation Act and the Alabama Workforce Pathways Act were also significant topics, both focusing on enhancing workforce development in the state.

“I mean to be intentional about serving my community and doing everything I can with all the influence I may possess to be able to get great things for our community to enjoy and for the people of Walker County to be able to have the best we can possibly have,” Reed said. “Your legislative delegation wants to go to Montgomery and fight for more than our fair share to be able to bring back the elements that are required to work alongside you and do the things that are so important to grow our community, provide for our children, and make the most of what we can have right here in Walker County.”

Reed and Whitfield

Chee-Vee Whitfield, Executive Director of the East Walker Chamber of Commerce, said, “I think Senator Reed is very sincere in the work that he’s doing for Walker County, and we are very appreciative of people like him who devote their time and energy to an often thankless job, and we appreciate him so much for being here with us tonight.” WL
