Jasper High School tenth-grader Gavin Blackwell recently broke the school record for the 3200-meter (2-mile) track and field event with a final time of 10:17.87. Immediately following the event, Gavin was unaware he had broken the record.

Recalling his surprise at the discovery, Gavin says, “It was an awesome experience. I didn’t realize I had done it until after because I’d forgotten what the previous record was. But once someone told me I had broken the record, I was happy! It was great news, and I’m excited for the chance to continue to do better.”

Gavin began running cross country in seventh grade and picked up track in eighth grade alongside a friend who convinced him to join. What started as a hobby has become one of Gavin’s greatest motivators to stay active and constantly set new goals for himself. He trains multiple times weekly, doing 6-mile-long runs and various endurance workouts.

Gavin plans to study computer science in college and continue running track and cross-country as long as possible.
