JOB TITLE: Journeyman Mechanic
DEPARTMENT: District Supervisor, Walker County
JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for supervising and participating in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment
MAJOR DUTIES: Repairs and rebuilds gasoline and diesel engines; repairs and rebuilds transmissions, differentials, starters and alternators; repairs and maintains hydraulic and air brake systems; repairs gas, oil, brake fluid and transmission fluid leaks; installs and adjusts clutches; performs general maintenance; greases vehicles and equipment; sharpens blades on tractors and mowers; welds and operates cutting torch; performs suspension work; repairs, replaces and rotates tires; repairs and rebuilds grass mowers; cleans shop areas.
Operates equipment and vehicles to diagnoses problems and to ensure they are operating properly; operates a vehicle to pick up and deliver vehicles and equipment; operates front end loader
Secures authority for minor expenditures; completes related paperwork; makes requests of supervisors for major expenditures
Answers telephones and provides information and assistance
Selects, organizes and assigns mechanics to perform repairs and maintenance; schedules and prioritizes work to be performed; monitors progress of repairs and maintenance; ensures tools, equipment and spare parts are available; meets daily with mechanics to discuss problems, priorities and recommendations
Performs other related duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
Knowledge of mechanical repair and maintenance procedures
Knowledge of county and department policies and procedures
Knowledge of occupational and health and safety regulations including accident causation and prevention
Knowledge of the county road system
Skill in the operation of vehicles and equipment
Skill in the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of a variety of equipment and vehicles
Skill in oral and written communications
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The District Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy and the nature and propriety of the final results
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include equipment repair manuals, department policies and procedures and equipment operation manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related supervisory and mechanical duties. Heavy traffic and inclement weather may contribute to the complexity of the position
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to maintain and repair department vehicles and equipment. Success in this position contributes to the efficiency of department operations
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, vendors and members of the general public
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information; resolve problems; motivate or influence persons and provide services
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, bending, crouching, stooping, standing or walking. The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity and distinguish between shades of color
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in a garage or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles or gloves
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: This position has direct supervision over Mechanic (2)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic reading, writing and mathematical skills to do the job.
Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years’ experience or service
Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
