Tuesday, May 21, marked a significant milestone for the Jasper community as United Way of Central Alabama hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for a new park. This project is part of United Way of Central Alabama’s Centennial Parks initiative, which aims to celebrate the organization’s century-long commitment to service by creating vibrant community spaces across the six counties it serves.

“United Way of Central Alabama is building these parks to say thank you to the communities that have supported us for 100 years,” said Drew Langloh, United Way of Central Alabama President and CEO. “But this is not just about building a park. It’s about building community. We could hire contractors to come in and knock out building a park over a weekend, but instead, we engage approximately 300 volunteers.

“United Way is about the community coming together to make things better in their own neighborhoods, and we’re very excited about this project in Walker County.”

The new Centennial Park in Jasper will feature various amenities designed to meet the needs of the local community. A rendering of the space showcases the planned layout, including an outdoor pavilion with picnic tables, a children’s play area, a walking track encircling the park, enhancements to the existing soccer field, and newly planted shade trees.

This initiative represents a long-term commitment to community enrichment. United Way of Central Alabama plans to foster ongoing volunteer service opportunities through annual cleanups, beautification efforts, and potential future expansions. WL

Centennial Park will be located at 200 20th Street East, Jasper, AL 35501.
