JOB TITLE: Driver/Operator

DEPARTMENT: Solid Waste, Walker County

JOB SUMMARY: This position operates equipment inthe collection of solidwaste.

MAJOR DUTIES:

Performsbasic inspection ofassigned vehicle, including checking gauges, tires, gas, oil,and water levels; reports any problems tosupervisor, refuels vehicle as needed; completes work orders for needed repairs;washes and greasesvehicle. 

Meets with supervisor toreceive special instructions; collectsnecessary equipment and loads onto truck; drives assignedroute; loads dumpsters onto truck and delivers to assignedlocations; unloads at designed location; empties trash cans ontotruck; replaces trash containers and lids; picks up bagged trash along route; ensures spilledgarbage ispicked up. 

Replaces and cleans dumpsters with disinfectants as needed.

Informs citizens of any problems that may occurin collecting refuse and offers possible solutions. 

Collectspresorted paper, aluminum, and glass recyclables as assigned.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

Knowledge of equipment operation guidelines.

Knowledge of county and department policies and procedures.

Knowledge of equipment maintenance and repair guidelines.

Knowledge of traffic rules, regulations, and speed limits.

Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles and equipment.

Skill in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.

Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Solid Waste Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. 

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include department policies and procedures, and equipment operation manuals. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application. 

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related solid wastecollection equipment operation duties. Heavy traffic andinclement weathermay contribute to the complexity of the position. 

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to operate heavy equipment in the collection of solid waste. Success in this position contributes to the effectiveness of the solid waste collection process.

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers and members of the general public. 

PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information; resolve problems; and provide services. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, bending, crouching, stooping, standing or walking. The employee must frequently lift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguish between shades of color. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally, in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves. 

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic reading, writing and mathematical skills to do the job. 

Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years. 

Possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). 

(Unless state law or local ordinance requires a specific degree, the Board should not exclude an applicant from consideration for a position based on his/her lack of a specific degree.)
