Luke Emerson turns setbacks into comebacks.

Luke grew up playing soccer, but after he endured multiple concussions from playing, his doctor recommended he step away from physical sports.

While the news was disheartening, a new opportunity arose thanks to his grandfather, a former Jacksonville State University athlete, who encouraged Luke’s mother to let him try tennis. What started as a trial quickly developed into a passion.

Luke began playing tennis in eighth grade and continued to refine his skills throughout his high school years in Helena, Ala.

His dedication paid off when he was recruited to play for Bevill State Community College, where he is now a sophomore representing the Bears under the leadership of Coach Eli Matthews.

Luke admires Coach Matthews for his commitment to the team, saying, “He pushes us. He’s always got us out there, even during off-season, like right now. He has us going out to the field, doing workouts, running, and staying in shape.”

Currently ranked 10th in the region and 26th in the nation as a doubles player, Luke thrives in the competitive atmosphere his team brings to every match. “

After graduating from Bevill, Luke plans to start a career with AT&T, taking the same drive and determination that made him a standout athlete into his professional life.

With one year left in his tennis career at Bevill, he’s focused on finishing strong and making his mark on the court. WL
