At Sumiton Christian High School, senior Sawyer Frazier isn’t just battling his opponents, he’s also tackling a personal health challenge. Diagnosed with hypoglycemia last year, Sawyer has had to make significant lifestyle changes to manage his condition while continuing to excel in two sports.
“Last year, I was fine, then we had this camp for the little kids, and one day, I just about passed out at practice,” Sawyer recalls. “I went to the doctor, I found out, and I just basically cut all my sugar out. And it’s just been one thing after another, trying to keep it and watch it before practice. So now I’m eating beef jerky to get the protein in me and keep my levels good.”
On the basketball court, Sawyer plays power forward and center for coach Jeremy Hall, where he’s a force in the paint. On the baseball diamond, he juggles multiple roles—third baseman, first baseman, and right-handed pitcher—for the Rickey Bowen-led team. Sawyer was also a key contributor to Sumiton Christian’s 2024 state championship baseball team, adding yet another accolade to his already impressive high school career.
But for Sawyer, it’s not just about the wins. “The brotherhood I have built with my close friends” is what he values most about being part of these teams.
A dedicated student-athlete with a 3.0 GPA, Sawyer has big plans after his May 2025 graduation. He dreams of continuing his athletic career while pursuing a trade in auto mechanics or welding—fields where his team-oriented mindset and championship spirit are sure to shine. WL
