Bevill State Hosts STEM Explorers: Drones and Robotics Day for 5th and 6th Graders

Walker County, AL – Bevill State Community College successfully hosted the STEM Explorers: Drones & Robotics Day on September 21, 2024, welcoming approximately 40 students from Walker County Schools, Jasper City Schools, and Sumiton Christian School. Funded by the STEM22 grant, the goal of this hands-on event was to spark interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, particularly in robotics and drones.

The camp, originally conceptualized by two of Bevill State’s STEM AmbassadorsEthan Crowell and Ethan Huynh, was planned and executed in collaboration with Bevill State administration. The event showcased drone exhibitions and VEX Robotics activities, giving students the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge technology. Their combined efforts helped generate interest in STEM among young students, while introducing them to local robotics teams at middle and high schools. The day included interactive challenges and lunch, fostering a fun and educational environment.

Dr. Joel Hagood, President of Bevill State Community College, expressed his appreciation for the initiative, stating, “The STEM22 project is a vital part of our mission to inspire and prepare the next generation of innovators. Today’s camp exemplifies the value of collaboration, and I want to commend Ethan Crowell and Ethan Huynh for their dedication and vision in making this event a reality. I also want to thank our faculty, staff, and ambassadors who worked tirelessly to ensure the event’s success. Together, we are providing opportunities that will shape the future workforce of Alabama.”

The STEM22 program, funded by the Alabama Power Foundation and the Walker Area Community Foundation, is dedicated to creating seamless pathways for students to pursue STEM education and careers. Bevill State’s partnership with these organizations, along with the support from Jasper City and Walker County school systems, plays a crucial role in preparing students for future workforce opportunities in technology and automation.
