Job Responsibilities
The 1st Class Fitter-Welder position comes with a range of responsibilities focused on both safety and quality. Employees are expected to:
- Follow all safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized workspace.
- Interpret detailed drawings and identify the most efficient methods to fabricate weldments.
- Convert metric drawings to English and resolve discrepancies in sketches or job information.
- Identify and source the correct materials needed for each project.
- Perform plate and structural layouts, forming parts using steel fabrication equipment.
- Tack weld heavy plates and prepare them for further welding or machining.
- Maintain both the appearance and structural integrity of welds while preparing edges and cleaning welds as necessary.
- Utilize overhead cranes to move bulky weldments safely and efficiently.
Required Skills and Experience
To be considered for the role of 1st Class Fitter-Welder at Wilson Machine, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- A minimum of 5 years of verifiable experience fitting and welding in a heavy job shop environment.
- The ability to interpret both metric and English measurements.
- Successful completion of a welding test judged on the quality and appearance of welds in all positions.
Physical Demands
The position requires physical stamina and the ability to meet specific demands, including:
- Regular standing, walking, climbing, lifting (up to 55 pounds regularly, and up to 75 pounds occasionally), as well as stooping, crouching, and kneeling.
- The ability to effectively communicate in English and maintain specific vision abilities, including depth perception and near vision.
- Tolerance for exposure to welding fumes, loud noises, and UV rays from electric arc welding.
- The ability to work while using a respirator or face mask, as required by the job.
