The Jasper Vikings, renowned for their basketball prowess, hosted the highly anticipated Jasper Christmas Classic at Carl Cannon Gymnasium on December 19-20, 2023. Enthusiastic fans, skilled players, and dedicated coaches from across the southeast assembled to witness a championship clash that promised to showcase some of the nation’s finest athletes.

Throughout the tournament, the Vikings displayed an unwavering commitment to success. They pushed their limits with every game, showcasing their skill and fierce determination to emerge victorious. Their agility on the court, precise passes, and graceful execution of plays highlighted their deep passion for the sport.

As the tournament culminated, the Jasper Vikings celebrated dual triumphs, having conquered formidable opponents with grit and heart. The Jasper Christmas Classic stood as a testament to talent and sportsmanship, creating enduring memories for players, coaches, fans, and organizers.

The tournament’s first day pitted the Vikings against Florence (MS). The game started with both teams exhibiting tough defense, strategic passes, and accurate shooting. However, the standout performance came from Jasper’s towering center, 6-foot-9 Miller Moody, who delivered a career-best game. Moody’s impressive 28-point contribution propelled the Vikings to a commanding 71-49 victory over Florence.

The second day brought a fresh challenge as Jasper faced off against Fayette County (GA). Opening with a jumper at the elbow, Caden Steiner set the tone for a game marked by strategic moves and intense competition. Despite a slow start and trailing 9-8 by the end of the first quarter, Jasper gained momentum in the second quarter, fueled by Steiner’s dunk in a fast break.

Fayette County took the lead, but Jasper, led by Steiner’s prowess, regained control by halftime. The game intensified, with both teams exchanging three-pointers. Heading into the fourth quarter, Jasper held onto their lead by slowing the pace. However, with Keith Gillespie’s consecutive three-pointers, Fayette County tied the game at 44 with less than 30 seconds remaining.

In the final moments, a crucial play unfolded. With only ten seconds on the clock, the Vikings orchestrated a pass to Miller Moody down low. Moody scored, drew a foul, and secured a three-point lead for Jasper. Despite Fayette County’s attempts to equalize with missed three-pointers, the Vikings clinched a hard-fought 47-44 victory.

After the game, Jasper’s head coach, Heath Burns, expressed his pride in the defensive effort displayed by the team, saying, “I’m really proud of the guys for laying it out on the line for four quarters.”

Looking ahead, the Vikings are set to participate in a New Year tournament at Pigeon Forge High School in Tennessee before returning to Jasper to begin area play. WL
