TITLE: Communications Officer
DEPARTMENT: Sheriff’s Department, Walker County
JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for the dispatching of law enforcement officers in response to emergency and non-emergency calls
MAJOR DUTIES:
Receives and provides emergency and non-emergency information to Deputies
Answers emergency and non-emergency telephone calls
Monitors radio traffic
Checks law enforcement agency records for warrants; researches driver’s license information; retrieves vehicle tag and registration information
Enters local warrants into computer database
Monitors, updates and researches NCIC and ACJIC data bases; prepares and returns monthly ACJIC validations
Enters missing persons information
Enters stolen property information
Sends and receives faxes
Dispatches tow truck as needed
Performs other related duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:
Knowledge of local streets and landmarks
Knowledge of NCIC and ACJIC rules and regulations
Knowledge of department policies and procedures
Knowledge of radio codes
Skill in operating such office equipment as a computer, calculator, typewriter, copier and facsimile machine
Skill in report preparation and records maintenance
Skill in public and interpersonal relations
Skill in oral and written communication
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Chief Deputy assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy and the nature and propriety of the final results
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include the Alabama Criminal Code, NCIC regulations, ACJIC regulations and Sheriff’s Department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related dispatching duties. The need to respond effectively to emergency situations contributes to the complexity of the position
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to perform dispatch duties in response to emergency and non-emergency situations. Success in this position contributes to the safety of law enforcement personnel and citizens
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, members of the general public, representatives of other law enforcement agencies, court personnel, emergency medical responders and federal agents
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems and provide services
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing or stooping
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent
Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Alabama for the type of vehicle or equipment operated
Possession of or ability to readily obtain DCI/NCIC certification
