Five Sumiton Middle School students brought home awards for excellence in performing arts from the state Beta Club convention held in February.
Sixth grader Jaziah Stewart was awarded first place for solo drum performance. With eight years of drumming experience under his belt, Jaziah took to the stage for his performances at the convention with some apprehension. However, he gained confidence and delivered two outstanding solos that led to him securing first place.
“The first performance was a little scary, but the second one was really easy,” he says. “I hope that this award will help me get into a good college one day.”
Madeline Stephenson, Audrey Harding, Kaeleigh Alexander, and Ella Tolbert’s group dance showcase earned third place at the convention. The group of sixth grade girls says they shared Jaziah’s initial fear of the stage, but the final performance was a breeze.
“It was a great experience,” said Madeline.
Ella added, “I think it really helped us build our confidence.”
Congratulations to these young performers on their accomplishments! WL
