Recently the Walker County Board of Education recognized several groups throughout the county for outstanding achievements, including Curry High School Varsity Cheerleading and Beta Club, Dora High School Beta Club, Sumiton Middle School Beta Club, and Cordova Elementary School. Students were also recognized in a wide variety of categories at the Beta Club State Convention. In addition, several local schools received recognition for Marzano High Reliability Schools, Level 1 Certification.
“One of the greatest things we can do as a board is take time to recognize these students and educators, and let them know how much we appreciate what they’re doing, not only for the school system, but for Walker County as a whole,” said Superintendent Dr. Dennis Willingham.
A portion of the meeting served as an opportunity for board members and Dr. Willingham to acknowledge and celebrate the hard work and dedication of these outstanding accomplishments, which include:
Curry High School Varsity Cheerleading
- 2nd Place – State 4A Gameday Cheer
- 2nd Place – National 4A Gameday Cheer
Curry High School Beta Club (State Convention)
- Club Award – G.O.L.D Key Award (growth in convention attendance)
- Colby Morrison – State President Campaign
- Connor Meadows – 2nd Place, Black & White Photography, 2nd Place, Social Studies
- Ella Kate Motes, Serenity Mathura, and Paisley Morrison – 3rd Place, Portfolio
- Taylor Boshell, Cole Browning, and Noah Noles – 2nd Place, Freshman Problem Solving
- Paisley Morrison – 3rd Place, Performing Arts – Solo Dance; Premiere Performer chosen to participate in the opening number of National Convention in Louisville, KY
Dora High School Beta Club (State Convention)
- Jami Coleman – 3rd Place 10th Grade Science
- Savannah Hester – 1st Place, Division 1 Mixed Media Art
- Emma Harrison – 3rd Place, Black and White Photography
- Caleigh Brasfield – 1st Place, Division 2 Speech

Following last year’s Marzano honors for Cordova Elementary School, Bankhead Middle School, and Dora High School, these certifications put Walker County Schools on track to be the first system to become district-wide certified Level 1 High Reliability Schools. WL
